Bankruptcies are filed under the following chapter headings:
Chapter 7 – Straight bankruptcy: debtor gives up non-exempt assets and debts are settled.
Chapter 11 – Allows businesses and individuals to restructure debt in order to repay it.
Chapter 12 – Allows family farmers to restructure their finances to avoid liquidation for foreclosure.
Chapter 13 – The plan is designed by the person to pay off a percentage of the debt based on solvency. All disposable income must be used to pay off debts.
